Anna Blinkova has caused a major upset in the 2024 Australian Open, defeating the third-seeded Elena Rybakina, who was the runner-up in 2023.In a thrilling second-round match at the Rod Laver Arena, Rybakina lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-6 (20-22) to Russia’s Blinkova, currently ranked 57th in the WTA standings. Despite Rybakina’s efforts, including saving two match points, Blinkova secured the victory in a 10-point tie-break, marking one of the biggest surprises in the tournament.
Rybakina, who entered the Australian Open with good form and a recent victory at the Brisbane International, had a strong start to the season with a 6-1 record.
However, her journey was cut short by Blinkova’s impressive performance. Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, had reached the final of the 2023 Australian Open, where she was defeated by Aryna Sabalenka.
